“Winterbreak” by MUNA
MUNA will be playing a show this Friday, Feb. 3 at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco! Tiesto’s Deep House Remix of “Winterbreak” has been quite popular on Spotify, but I like the original version–it is truer to female trio’s darker, mysterious sound. After touring with Grouplove in fall 2016, MUNA made their TV debut by performing their song “Loudspeaker” live on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in Nov. 2016. The three girls met during college at USC and started working on music together in 2013. Earlier this month, the band released a new single titled “Crying On The Bathroom Floor” that is also worth checking out!
“Still Standing Still” by Flor (feat. Lostboycrow)
Flor performed earlier this month at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, opening up for Great Good Fine Ok. Their set was super energetic and fun, whether you were familiar with their music or not! Lead singer Zach Grace has vibrant red hair that flashes around like a fire as he plays his heart out on stage. I really like this collab that the band did with Lostboycrow, an artist that passed through San Francisco last summer when he opened for VÉRITÉ at the Rickshaw Stop. “Still Standing Still” has a surf vibe mixed with electronic indie synthpop. This song has some low, chilling tones paired with a fun beat... I just want to dance to this song on the beach in the winter and feel refreshed!
“The Other” by Lauv
I’ve been listening to “The Other” on repeat for days. Mellow yet emotional, it’s a unique spin off the classic love song about being caught between your head and your heart while questioning a relationship that you cannot quite walk away from. There is so much passion in the way in which this song is sung, I cannot get over it!
“I Was Wrong - Robin Schulz Remix” by A R I Z O N A
A R I Z O N A will be opening for Kevin Garrett on the False Hope Tour coming to the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco this Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14! The Robin Schulz Remix is a little bit more upbeat than the original and I like it more, but honestly both versions are great! There is even an acoustic version of the song too. The song holds its emotional power through all the versions. Sincerely apologetic, it will make you feel some type of way.
“Keep It Simple” by Tove Lo
Widely known for her hits “Habits (Stay High)” and “Talking Body,” Tove Lo will be returning to the Fox Theater in Oakland on Wednesday, Feb. 8. She released her newest album Lady Wood in 2016 which has done really well! “Keep It Simple” is one of the lesser known songs off the album and I think it needs more play. Tove Lo consistently performed the song in her Dec. 2016 shows, so she will most likely keep it on her setlist for her upcoming tour.
“Operate” by ASTR
ASTR is an experimental electronic duo from New York City. I heard “Operate” playing in a Forever 21 and I had to know what it was. It was a perfect song to shop and try clothes on to. Captivating and bold, it’s something I’d definitely recommend listening to as you get ready to go out on a Friday night. It reminds me of Banks and Tove Lo mixed with Marian Hill.
“Old School” by Urban Cone
Swedish electro indie pop band Urban Cone will be opening for MUNA at the Rickshaw Stop this Friday, Feb. 3. Urban Cone has a song titled “Come Back To Me” that features pop queen of the clouds Tove Lo who will be performing at the Fox Theater in Oakland just five days later on Wednesday, Feb. 8. “Old School” was released last Friday, Jan. 27 and has more of a funk influence than the band’s previous music. Stay tuned, Urban Cone is planning to release more new music in 2017!
