Ty Dolla $ign and Lil Uzi Vert opened for G-Eazy on The Endless Summer Tour at the FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine on Tuesday, July 31.
As the sun was setting over the outdoor amphitheatre, Ty Dolla $ign took the stage to start his set more than five minutes early – as if it wasn’t already rare enough for live music to actually begin on time! Surprisingly, the next two sets also started almost 10 minutes ahead of schedule. As fans continued to file into the venue, it was all hype as the crowd jumped along to Ty Dolla $ign’s music with their hands in the air.
The rapper performed some of his biggest hits including “Paranoid” and “Or Nah” and even played a Drake cover. Beyond the rap that he is known for, Ty Dolla $ign’s live vocals were impressive to say the least – after he would hit a seamless vocal run, the audience would go wild. His clean singing and spot-on tonal quality sounded overwhelmingly better live than on his recorded tracks.
Ty Dolla $ign would frequently flash a smile at the crowd between verses and take a hit from the joint he carried around the stage with him. He also alerted the crowd that it was Lil Uzi Vert’s birthday. For “Blasé,” he ran into the audience and danced with fans – many of which tried to snap selfies with the artist – on one of the upper terraces to end his performance on a high note.
Next up was Lil Uzi Vert who seemed to be hosting his own birthday party more so than playing a typical show. The stage was illuminated with upside down crosses that doubled as LED screens and a giant skull that released smoke from its mouth. By his third song, Lil Uzi Vert was in the crowd and stayed there for almost half of his set, trying to turn a 12,000 person venue into an intimate house party as he celebrated his 24th birthday by dancing the night away amidst fans.
Before heading back towards the stage, he jumped from an upper terrace that must have been at least 15 feet above the ground into the crowd below – initial paralytic shock from the audience by this move then turned into mayhem as a wild frenzy ensued. Never seeing something quite like that before, the general consensus seemed to be that fans loved it after it was apparent that the Philadelphia rapper was not injured in any way.
Lil Uzi Vert played crowd pleasers including “Money Longer” and Migo’s “Bad and Boujee” which he is featured on. He had his DJ spin “XO TOUR Llif3” for a second time to close out his set and told the audience to sing the song to him in lieu of singing him the classic happy birthday song, to which they abided.
Headliner G-Eazy gave his fans a night to remember by bringing out many special guests to perform alongside him throughout the night including YG, Tyga and Marc E. Bassy. In terms of production, G-Eazy is putting on his craziest shows to date on The Endless Summer Tour with giant moving LED screens displaying all new graphics, smoke, flames, fireworks and even a Ford Mustang that came out mid-set from behind a panel that concealed it backstage.
Smiling and looking out at the packed venue, G-Eazy said, “This shit is insane!” Throughout his set he continued to beam and his energy never faltered, jumping back and forth across the stage for about an hour and a half while playing a hefty 27 songs. In between songs as he shared his Bay Area love with Orange County, girls would throw bras on stage.
Sporting new bleach blonde hair and a gucci shirt, the rapper played everything from his newest singles like “1942,” “Power” and “Drop” to “I Mean It” and “Lotta That” from his 2014 album These Things Happen. Notably, after his recent breakup with pop singer Halsey earlier in July, G-Eazy changed the lyrics in “1942” from “Back in Oakland I'm a king, I know and Halsey is a ting” to “Back in Oakland I'm a king, I know and this girl is a ting” and pointed to a fan on the floor. He would also change the names of various cities from the recorded versions of his tracks to say “OC” to get the Irvine crowd going and personalize the show. G-Eazy ended the show with “No Limit” and threw up a heart sign with his hands to thank his fans.
Having great support from both fans and other artists, G-Eazy continues to grow at a rapid pace, putting on bigger shows and drawing in bigger crowds. It is an exciting time for G-Eazy and fans eagerly wait for what will come next after this major tour. Although The Endless Summer Tour’s cross country run will ultimately come to an end by early September, the memories made in the summer heat will live on endlessly.
